Moonstone is created near to the entrance of doorways in Buddhist religious sites. Both ancient and contemporary moonstone has architectural feature. It is also a good example of the artistic capabilities of stone workers in Sri Lanka. A moonstone is seen as the shape of a half-moon (ada sanda), hence it is called as the name of sandakada pahana in Sinhalese. There are, however, square-shaped or rectangular. The moonstones originated as square-shaped stones in past, then later developed into semi-circular shaped ones. The carvings of the lion reflected in moonstone may have been removed, perhaps out of respect for the Sinhalese people.  Best example for moonstone is the Vatadage moonstone in Polonnaruwa.”
